Help and Emergency Response, Inc. provides leadership, advocacy, and resources to survivors and communities affected by Domestic Violence, Sexual Violence, Stalking, and Human Trafficking.
The work of Help and Emergency Response, Inc. will create a safe and prosperous future for all through awareness, services, and training for lasting change in the communities we serve.
The HER shelter currently offers the following services:

Special Notes/Funding
30-day emergency shelter for domestic violence victims as well as their children. The HER Shelter can house up to 42 individuals at one time in their 15 room, six bathroom facility. They provide in-shelter meals set by the requirements of the USDA Food Programs.
Availability
Demand for the shelter is very high and there is a waitlist.
Required Documents
Required documentation varies from client to client. HER Shelter staff will make the necessary determinations during their intake.
Eligibility
---Clients can be male or female. ---Clients need to be experiencing or fleeing Domestic Violence ---Male clients will be housed in offsite hotel ---Clients should be from Chesapeake or Portsmouth, but the Shelter will make exceptions ---The shelter can accommodate out of state clients on a case by case basis
Fees
All services are offered free of charge.
Intake Procedure
Interested clients need to call the 24 Hour Hotline and participate in a 10-15 minute assessment. There is a waitlist for shelter. Clients placed on the waitlist must call every day to maintain their status. Clients in immediate danger will take priority over others.
Languages
English is the only language spoken by the staff, but some volunteers do speak Spanish.
