Description:
This is a prisoner re-entry program assisting persons who have been released from jail or prison.
Applicants meet with an intake counselor for a comprehensive assessment of their circumstances and needs. From the assessment, the applicant may be accepted into the program and given a success plan. Acceptance is based upon verification of eligibility, suitability and the individuals' commitment to change. The success plan is a list of personal and professional goals based on the individuals' needs. This plan may include completing their GED or educational programs, substance abuse support groups, life skills training classes, or employment referrals.
Second Chances is a partnership between the City of Norfolk, Virginia and The STOP Organization to address the growing need for re-entry programs. We have helped over 2,000 individuals and families re-establish themselves in the community.
We take a holistic approach at Second Chances. We work not only to help with employment, but also with any barrier that prevents or makes it difficult to obtain and maintain employment (i.e previous addiction, substance abuse, homelessness, training and education).
In addition, we address the problem of generational incarceration by working with youth and kids of incarcerated parents through the K.I.P. Care Program.
Call center staff please note that the organization will take a case by case referral for the family of an incarcerated person who is not in their program already.
Transitional Housing is available for both Men and Women who are employed. Additionally there is a second opportunity for transitional housing from a private provider. Call Center please refer the caller to Second Chances staff.
GED Prep classes are offered to any citizen of Norfolk. Persons interested in classes are to call second Chances staff.
